For the Sake of Others - Week 3 “We Can’t Fail Our City”
Key Scripture: Acts 2:42-47, Acts 5:12-14, Acts 5:15-16, Isaiah 32:14-18, Jeremiah 29:7, Habakkuk 3:2
1. Jesus’ first church was internally strong.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. The sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47
“The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.” Acts 5:12-14
2. Jesus’ first church was externally focused.
“As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.” Acts 5:15-16
The Church is uniquely called to …
A) Influence our city.
Influence – “The capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on … the actions, behaviors, opinions of others.”
B) Restore life, healing and wholeness to our city.
Jeremiah 29:7 … “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
C) Bring God’s love to our city.
D) Bring spiritual awakening to our city.
Habakkuk 3:2 … “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, oh Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known.”
